ORTHOTICS

The practice stocks a range of “off the shelf” arch supports and orthotics. Most of these can be purchased from reception or through any of the practitioners that you may see here. The simple orthotics can be modified by Mike Morris to provide further support with extra anti-pronation or heel raising additions.

However, if these simple inexpensive orthotics are not suitable for you because you require more complex support, or just better levels of comfort, then Helen Mayors can provide custom fitted supports at a reasonable cost (see below).

CUSTOM MADE ORTHOTICS

These are not just arch supports for "flat feet", which most people are familiar with They are individually tailored to take into account many other painful foot problems.

Two and a half times our body weight goes through our feet up to ten thousand times each day. The use of correctly prescribed orthotics can greatly reduce the effects of these forces.

Many foot problems are the result of a faulty relationship between the muscles and the bones of the foot. Left untreated, they can lead to alterations in the way you stand and walk, resulting in "compensatory" patterns of aches and pains in the rest of the body, such as:
The shins
Knees
Back
Neck
Jaw

What's so special about the choice of orthotic?

We use an incredibly light and thin polymer composite material which, although it is extremely strong, remains flexible and always returns to its original shape. As a result they take up considerably less room in the shoe.
When wearing the orthotic your foot is gently and consistently directed into the optimum position allowing your foot to function correctly when walking, running or standing.

How long will I have to wear them?

There is not a standard answer to this question. It depends on the nature of the problem, your age, and how long the problem has been present.
The beauty of receiving osteopathic care before and after the fitting of the orthotic is that some of the structural problems can be corrected, so minimising the adjustments needed to be built in and, in some cases, reducing the length of time you need to wear them for. There are cases however where the orthotic cannot "cure" the problem and need to be worn permanently (as with glasses).

The manufaturers give a lifetime guarantee to the shell, but the covering may need to be replaced from time to time. Continued care from the osteopath will identify changes and determine what future modifications need to be made.

What's involved with getting the orthotic fitted?

You should make an appointment with the osteopath (ask the receptionist who to see) who will assess your feet and whole musculoskeletal system and fit the appropriate size and style for your needs.

There are 3 basic grades of shells - one rugged heavy duty grade, one for walking and running, and one suitable for "dress" shoes.

Costs:
As for any other osteopathic treatment £35
Plus the cost of the orthotic - from £65
