What is reflexology?

Foot and hand reflexology is based on the premise that there are zones and reflex areas in the feet and hands, which correspond to all body parts.

The physical act of applying specific pressure using thumb, finger and hand techniques, (without oil, lotion or creams), results in stress reduction causing a physiological change in the body.

What is a treatment like?

Both the patient and the reflexologist must be positioned comfortably to ensure maximum relaxation, a reclining position is usually preferred by the patient. The reflexologist will usually work on both bare feet but, if this is not possible, treatment can be given to the hands only. Beginning with the right foot, the reflex points on both feet are always stimulated, as the body is considered to be a whole unit. The pressure used varies for each person.

Is it uncomfortable?

Some of the areas touched may feel tender or uncomfortable, but this is purely transitory and may be an indication of congestion, tension or imbalance in a corresponding part of the body, so indicating that treatment is required

What are the benefits?

Treatment may last up to an hour and most patients find that it generates a deep tranquil relaxation. Because of this effect, treatment is often given to relieve stress induced conditions, however it has also been found to be helpful for digestive problems, PMS, gynaecological problems, joint pains, sinusitis and headaches.

Improved Circulation & Healing

We all know how important it is for blood to flow freely through the body, carrying oxygen and nutrients to all the cells in the body whilst removing waste products and toxins. (Stress and tension tighten up the cardiovascular system and restrict the blood flow so circulation can become sluggish).

By reducing stress and tension, reflexology allows the cardiovascular vessels to conduct the flow of blood naturally and easily, improves the nerve functions and stimulates the body’s own healing mechanisms.

How will I feel after treatment?

After the treatment (within the following forty eight hours) your body may respond in different ways. Each person is unique. You may have any number of quite intense short-lived reactions. It is important to tell your reflexologist about any such changes as they indicate how your body is responding to treatment.
